PBL is promoted by professional and funding bodies as an appropriate strategy for professional education and increasingly as the method of choice. PBL is now also now spreading into non-– professional subject areas of Higher Education. The claims made for PBL would, if substantiated, represent an important improvement in outcomes from Higher Education. Thus it is of considerable importance that questions about what forms of PBL produce which outcomes for which students in what circumstances are rigorously investigated. There is a large volume of published work on PBL. However it is the contention of this review that despite this volume of literature, existing overviews of the field do not provide high quality evidence with which to …

Responses to the pilot systematic review of problem-based learning.
We would like to thank Diana Dolmans, Richard Farrow, and Geoff Norman for taking the time to read and comment on the report of the pilot systematic review and metaanalysis we completed. Such responses are an indication that the report has been successful in at least 2 of its goals: it has stimulated further debate about the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) and how it should be eva...
متن کاملThe Effect of Topical Iodine and Fluoride Varnish Combination in Preventing Early Childhood Caries: A Pilot Study
Background: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) in the earliest stage is preventable. The studies indicate oral bacteria play an important role in pathogenesis of dental caries. According to high prevalence of ECC, alternative therapies should be explored in order to reduce the occurrence of it. Aim: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a product containing Povidone Iodine 10% and Sodium Fl...
متن کاملThe effectiveness of case-based learning in health professional education. A BEME systematic review: BEME Guide No. 23.
BACKGROUND Case-based learning (CBL) is a long established pedagogical method, which is defined in a number of ways depending on the discipline and type of 'case' employed. In health professional education, learning activities are commonly based on patient cases. Basic, social and clinical sciences are studied in relation to the case, are integrated with clinical presentations and conditions (i...
متن کاملIsolation, characterization and transduction of canine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cBM-MSCs)
BACKGROUND: Stem cell therapy in small animal medicineis still in its infancy and few in vitro and in vivo research projectsregarding animal Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) have beencarried out. On the other hand, Cell tracking is the first step of thecell-based therapies and is essential to recognize cell fate posttransplantation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was toisolate, characterize, an...
متن کاملThe effect of platelet-rich plasma on human mesenchymal stem cell-induced bone regeneration of canine alveolar defects with calcium phosphate-based scaffolds
Objective(s): Autologous bone transplantation known as the “gold standard” to reconstruction of osseous defects has known disadvantages. This study was designed to explore the effects of hydroxy-apatite/tricalcium-phosphate (HA/TCP) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the osteogenesis ability of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAdMSCs) in vitro and in vivo. Materials and Methods: hA...
